Action star Tom Cruise started his Hollywood career in 1981, at the age of 19, with movie “Endless Love”. In the span of 40 years he has given blockbuster films like Top Gun, Mission Impossible, Jerry Maguire etc. I mean this guy has literally shaped my youth and I’ve absolutely loved his movies. Though many believe that Cruise should’ve won an Oscar for Born on 4th of July, and I agree. But hey better late than never.

Recently at the 16th Governors award, Tom Cruise (63), received his Honorary Oscar. Director Alejandro Iñárritu gave the award in the presence of Hollywood icons like Steven Spielberg, Colin Farrell and Jerry Bruckheimer. Cruise in his usual charm, walked the podium and accepted the award. After a long standing ovation, Cruise thanked everyone who is been part of his journey.

In his speech the actor said, “It’s a privilege to share the evening with all of you and everyone in this room. The studios, the agencies and the artists, I thank you.” He further said ” My love for cinema began at an early age. I mean as early as I can remember. I was just a little kid in this darkened theater…” You know the entire cultures, and lives and landscapes and all of it was just unfolding in front of me. And it sparked something in me.”

He also thanked the directors, technicians, editors, craftsman, and the audience who has been part of his filmmaking journey. Lastly the actor said “Cinema, it takes me around the world and it helps me to appreciate and respect differences. It shows me also our shared humanity, how alike we are in so many ways.” “So making films is not what I do. It’s who I’m.”

Every year the Academy of Motion Picture Arts hosts the Governor awards, these awards honor the exceptional contribution of an artist in film industry. The award ceremony has three lifetime achievement awards; Academy Honorary Award, The Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award, and the Irving G, Thalberg Memorial Award.
