81st Golden Globes Awards
The 81st Golden Globes Awards kicked off with lots of glitz and glamour to honor the best in film and television for the year 2023. All the Biggest names in Hollywood walked the red carpet at Beverly Hilton to celebrate cinema. Dazzling gowns, sharp suiting, and shinning accessories rocked the event with great panache.
Barbie, Greta Gerwig’s box office hit that became the highest-grossing film of 2023 got nine nominations across various categories, while Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer earned eight, and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon earned seven. Meanwhile, the competition was tough for Best Performance by a Female Actor in a Motion Picture-Musical or Comedy, with Fantasia Barrino (The Color Purple), Jennifer Lawrence (No Hard Feelings), Natalie Portman (May December), Alma Pöysti (Fallen Leaves), Margot Robbie (Barbie), and Emma Stone (Poor Things) all nominated. On the small screen, Succession, which ended its four-season run in May, earned phenomenal nine nominations in drama, while The Bear and Only Murders in the Building earned five nominations each.
The show host Jo Koy, Fillipino American comedian, who I’ve personally never heard of did a boring job as an emcee. His jokes and writing tanked right from the start and embarrassed everybody in the room. I think Koy was trying hard to do a Ricky Gervais style hosting but he wasn’t even close to that. You’ll get the difference when you watch his monologue. One of Koy’s joke about Barbie’s “Big boobs” went so flat that it made Ryan Gosling furious.
But hey, enough about the bad hosting. I get it sometimes things work and sometimes they don’t. Apart from that the overall vibe was spectacular. Some of my favorite moments were Kieran Culkin burping into the mic, Lily Gladstone emotional acceptance speech and Cilian Murphy, who looked like a reindeer with a red nose during his speech.

Fashion at Golden Globes
The Golden globes and fashion goes hand in hand. It would be a crime if I don’t talk about the best dressed Hollywood stars at this event. Shimmery Dress, Flowy gowns, Sharp suits and Traditional jackets were the common theme this year. Margot Robbie looked stunning as she carried the Barbie look, wearing an Armani Prive. Taylor Swift opted for an acid green custom Gucci dress and my absolute favorite Carrey Mulligan, looked elegant in silver and black gown. I mean I can write an talk about her forever, Jeez I’ve a humongous crush on her.
Barry Keoghan of “Saltburn” looked chic in Louis Vuitton outfit. I must say that he bravely carried the look in red. Timothee Chalamet, Pedro Pascal, Cillian Murphy, Ryan Gosling and others went with the classic black suiting.
10 Golden Globe 2024 Best Moments
- Kieran Culkin Tells Pedro Pascal to “Suck it”
Accepting the award for Best Performance by male actor in TV series Drama, the succession star said
“I was nominated for a Golden Globe 20 years ago, and when that moment passed I sort of remember thinking I’m never going to be back in this room again. Which, was fine. Whatever. But thanks to Succession, I’ve been in here a couple of times, which is nice. But I sort of accepted I’m never going to be on stage, so this is a nice moment, thank you,” he said.
The moment turned hilarious when he humorously said “Suck it, Pedro. Mine!” to his fellow nomine Pedro Pascal, who sportingly took the jibe. BDW Kieran Culkin absolutely nailed the performance of Roman Roy in HBO’s dram Succession. I’m excited to see what he does next, now that the show has ended. - Lily Gladstone’s Historic Win
Looking like a stunning diva in a white strapless, Valentino gown, Lily completed the look with a contrasting black opera coat. She won the Best Actress award for her performance in Killers of the Flower Moon. She gave her speech in Blackfeet language – an Algonquian language spoken by Blackfoot / Niitsitapi people.
Here is what she said “I love everyone in this room. I don’t have words,” she said. “I just spoke a bit of Blackfeet language, a beautiful community nation that raised me, that encouraged me to keep going, keep doing this here with my mom, who, even though she’s not Blackfeet, worked tirelessly to get our language into our classroom so I had a Blackfeet language teacher growing up.”
She continued “It doesn’t belong to just me, I’m holding it right now. I’m holding it with all my beautiful sisters in the film at this table over here and my mother, Tantoo Cardinal, standing on all of your shoulders. Thank you.” It was an emotional moment to see her receive this award. - Kristen Wigg and Will Ferrel. The comedic Duo
Ever since I started watching SNL, Kristen Wigg’s performance has always put up a smile on my face. Her comedic timing and improvisation skills are clearly unmatched. And of Course Will Ferrel, who never looses an opportunity to make audiences laugh. So, every time these two pair up, it’s an absolute riot. Check out some of their previous Golden Globes snippets, you’ll surely love their intro.
This time they walked the stage to present the award for best performance by male actor in a motion picture- musical or comedy. As they attempted to make their intro, the duo’s “favorite song” interrupted them, which made them dance hilariously. It was great to see people genuine having a blast during this segment. - Cillian Murphy, Nolan’s Blue eyed boy
Let’s just admit that Cillian Murphy has given some phenomenal performance in the last few years. Whether it is the haunting portrayal of the The scarecrow in Batman series, or the stoic performance as Thomas Shelby in Peaky Blinders. Clearly he is one the best in the industry. It was great to see him receive the Best Actor award.
Accepting the award for Best Performance by Male actor in motion picture drama, Cillian won his first Golden Globes award for Oppenheimer. As he received the award he got a lipstick mark on his nose and he knowingly continued with his acceptance speech. He thanked Chris Nolan, Robert Downey Jr., Emily Blunt, Florence Pugh for their support and collaboration on this epic movie.
As of now Cillian has done six movies with Christopher Nolan, which includes Batman begins, The Dark Knight, The Dark Knight Rises, Dunkirk, Inception and Oppenheimer. Clearly he is Nolan’s blue eyed boy. - Christopher Nolan’s First Golden Globe
Oppenheimer earned eight golden globes nomination this year. Indeed this was one of the best documented film based on cultural event that shook the world. Christopher Nolan received his first Best Director Golden Globe award for Oppenheimer. After being nominated for several years, it was a delight to see him receive this award. However, I think The Prestige and The Dark Knight is still one his best made movies yet.
As he received the award he said “The only time I’ve ever been on this stage before was accepting one of these on behalf of our dear friend, (the late) Heath Ledger, and that was complicated and challenging for me,” Nolan said.
“And in the middle of speaking, I looked down at Robert Downey Jr. who caught my eye and gave me a look of support,” he added during the emotional moment. “The same look he’s giving me now — the same love and support he showed so many people in your community over the years.”
BDW, I think Nolan should definitely do another movie with RDJ. What say aren’t they great duo? - Kyle Jenner and Timothee Chalamet Kiss
Though the young couple didn’t walk the red carpet together, but they caught the attention sharing a kiss from their seats during the award ceremony. Timothee was nominated for best actor in a musical or comedy for his role in Wonka- but lost out to Paul Giamatti for The Holdovers.
Kyle Jenner looked ravishing in a vintage piece by Hanae Mori. She wore lace bodycon dress with low back, embellished with shiny black beads. - The Cast of “SUITS” reunite
The cast of Suits surprised everyone as they reunited on stage to present the award. It’s been almost fours years that this show ended, but even today the excitement is never ending. So this time when Patrick J Adams, Gabriel Macht, Sarah Rafferty and Gina Torres came together, fans were delighted.
They presented the cast of Succession with the award for Best Drama series. Another show that gave a final season, absolute knock out of the PARK. - Ayo Edebiri’s First Golden Globe
I must say that post Fleabag, any show that has excited me and stopped me from scrolling my god damn cellphone, it is The Bear. The writing, directing and acting on this show is top notch. No wonder it is so well received by the audiences worldwide.
This was Ayo Edebiri’s first Golden Globes nomination and win for Best Performance by a Female actor in a television series, musical or comedy. Looking gorgeous in a a strapless red Prada dress, she thanked her family and The Bear cast for this award. As she was leaving she said “If I forgot to thank you, I’m sorry…unless you were mean or something. Okay, bye.” Now that’s comedy, Mr. Jo koy. - Anatomy of Fall wins Best Screenplay
The French courtroom drama thriller directed by Justine Triet that she co wrote with Arthur Harari is one the best thriller of 2023 that I’ve seen. Premiered at the Cannes Film Festival, where it won Palme d’Or and Palm Dog award, the film received critical acclaim in France.
I must say that the competition was tough for this category. With nominees like Greta Gerwig and Noah Baumbach for Barbie, Christopher Nolan for Oppenheimer, Eric Roth and Martin Scorsese for Killers of the Flower Moon, it was surprise to see Anatomy of Fall win this award. But the double whammy was when it received the award for the Best Foreign language film. - Robert Downey Jr. Best Supporting actor
An actor who has entertained the audiences worldwide in last decade with his performance as Ironman. It’s hard to separate RDJ from Ironman. I mean he is literally Ironman. In 2023 when he collaborated with Christopher Nolan for Oppenheimer, the outcome was shockingly beautiful. He held his grounds as a menacing arch rival of Cillian Murphy’s character.
Throughout the film I didn’t see any glimpse of the so called RDJ’s charismatic acting style that I’ve seen in Marvel films. He immersed himself totally in to the role and gave a stunning performance. I wont be surprised if he ends up winning the Oscar this year for his role as Lewis Strauss.
RDJ thanked his Director and the entire cast of Oppenheimer upon receiving the award for Best Actor in a Supporting role male, in motion picture drama.
Golden Globes worst moments
Quick look at the terrible moments
- Jo Koy’s monologue and he blaming the writers for the poor Jokes.
- Jo koy joke about Taylor Swift didn’t receive any laughter apart from himself.
- Sorry, but no sorry. Again Jo Koy is on the list for joking about Barbie’s big boobs in his opening monologue that didn’t go very well.
